Changing Times
Summary
Changing times; the writer wants the society to change their mind regarding the gender stereotyping as the economic and social changes. Long time ago, little girls were raise to be good wives and mothers, they are warned not to be fat because they won’t find a husband, a perfect woman is described as looks great and doesn’t speak. While the little boys were raised to be breadwinners and the perfect man are who takes charge and sort out problems with their fists. Ironically, all of these have changed! Women are preferred to have tertiary education and a career rather than staying at home being housewives. And men nowadays, they don’t mind to cook by themselves and taking care of their children. So, in this article, the writer wants the society to stop this gender stereotyping before it’s creating more and more problems.
Reflection
By reading this we can see that the writer is completely biased against the gender stereotyping. He wants to persuade people to stop the gender stereotypes by writing this article. He criticized a lot the way people discriminate females and males in life. He also included a data based on a survey conducted on life expectancy at birth, literacy rates and standard of living as measured by gross domestic product (GDP) per capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) in US dollars where Malaysia has being ranked as the 61st country. Perhaps, is this matter of gender stereotypes, males and females are being contrasted is this article. He also discussed about the causes and the effects of gender stereotypes in our society.
So, for this reflection, I want to stress more on the cause and the effects of gender stereotyping. It has started long ago without us realising it. From the way our parents raised us until nowadays which made the society still look down on the ability of women. Everything, the boys or men will become the priority. While girls are being left out in anything they are supposed to get. It's about the right that has given no equality since the old day until now. Even though our country is developing, but our mind is still not changed. As the economic and social has changed, we should also realize that things cannot be the same for everything. We can see that nowadays education is not limited, regardless gender. However, when it comes to a certain job field such as engineering we can see there is still the limit and the gap of number between man and woman who work there. This is all about the acceptance and the perception of people toward the ability of women. That's just one case, there are another cases that involve not only women but also men.
By this traditional thinking and practices, they are actually giving a lot of negatives effect either to women and also men. According to the writer, enforcing traditional male and females stereotypes is actually encourages violent behavior in men. Why? Because they are unable to accept that their wife or girlfriend are more educated, higher position or higher salary than themselves. And this is due to the traditional thinking that they have usually do and being put to and plus, the perspective of the society too gave an effect of this violent behavior. Men might feel embarrassed for the situation he's in and have the low self estimates for themselves and latter they will express their feelings in vicious ways.
It also discourages individuals from pursuing certain activities in which they might have excelled. As for just now I gave an example from women sides in engineering career, let’s look on the men sides. Perhaps all of us can see that it is now that the most succeed chefs and fashion designers in Malaysia are men, but still they probably had being once insulted or being inhibited to be in their career initially. Only now, people are more admit that people as in man and woman are not only should do what they are supposed to do. But still, our society needs a long time to realize and accept that.
Beside that, gender stereotypes can also creates communication gap between male and female. How? Let us take an example from school. Still, the tradition thinking made the boys became the class monitor while girls are the assistant monitor. Even the boy is not good enough compare to the girl, boys names will still being nominated for class monitor. In co-curriculum itself, has created the communication rift between the students. Boys scout, girls scout and there are a lot more situations that actually we didn’t realize that we are also involved in stereotyping the gender. Even though the government claims that they are prohibit the discrimination on basis gender, but the truth is it’s happened because of the rules they implement themselves, and it’s still continuing. So, let us together strive to eliminate gender stereotyping completely before it’s too late because I believe that is the obligation of all of us.

In-Class Assigment - Reflection - Critical Reading SkillsWhat is your understanding of the following skills covered in the course: Main idea, pattern of organization, fact or opinion, bias, tone, purpose.
All of them are not only helping me in reading skills but also in writing skills. Therefore all of them are really important to be expert in.
2. Which skill is the most difficult to you? Which is the easiest?
Main idea is quite difficult, I have to read the whole passage very carefully and I have to associate each main idea for each paragraph to get the main idea. If I misunderstood the content of the passage or can’t understand what’s it all about-
One more the difficult topic for me is bias. I hardly recognize which sentence that shows the author’s bias. Plus, it is also not easy to for me to decide whether it is bias for or bias against
And the tone also quite hard! Sigh~… because it is too much type of tone. I wonder, will the answer need the exact word which describe the tone or is it ok if I put the tone in similar meaning???.. blur…
I can’t say any of them is the easiest- I can’t be very sure for that if I say it’s the easiest, then I have to fully score on it right?! So maybe semi-easy topic is the fact or opinion. I can easily distinguish the author words- whether it’s fact or opinion- by the tips that you’ve given us.
3. Which skill do you think is the most useful in reading or in helping you to read?
Tone and purpose, because if I can identify the word and make inference from that, I will easily understand the meaning of the passage.
4. Which skill do you think you will probably apply?
Pattern of organization, fact or opinion tone and bias. It will be helpful for the both reader and me to understand what I’ve written.
5. How do you tackle the problem of a difficult skill? Give example.
I read all the examples that have been given in class including the notes that you put in your blog. All of them are really helpful. TQ~ =)
6. What do you understand about critical reading?
Read about not unnecessary topics such as entertainment; not providing knowledge for reader. It is important to develop maturity in writing and also while in conversation with people around
7. How important do you think is critical reading in your future university studies?
Extremely important as it helps me in doing all my tasks and enhances my general knowledge which all of us need not only for university studies but also in our career sooner or later.
8. In reading the articles for your journal which of the skills do you normally apply or have applied?
Fact and opinion, tone and purposes as it help me a lot in understanding the articles

Journal 2
Summary
The article wrote by the author is due to the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam and Messenger to mankind. The article mentioned the important of knowledge since the Prophet era until now. The Prophet saying; “Go even to China, to seek knowledge” is still relevant today. The author also shared his opinions of the meaning of the word “China” in the saying. He also said that this saying is not only for Muslims but also to everyone else.
Besides that, he also wrote a bit the history at the Prophet time; the miracle of Quran, the various methods of educational used by Prophet Muhammad to reach out his followers, Prophet’s sunnah, the reason he is the exemplar of Islam and a lot more. Living by his example, is obligatory for every Muslims, said the author.
Reflection
For me, it is a good idea for the author wrote this article. Besides celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, in a way, he made the readers realized the important of knowledge nowadays using the example of Prophet Muhammad and the history of the Prophet’s time. He’s not only shared his opinion in this article but he also proved that knowledge is important in everyone’s life. His saying; “Go even to China, to seek knowledge” is still relevant in this era of globalisation and the drive towards a knowledge-based economy. From this article, we can see that the author is very admires the Prophet Muhammad. By the way he is describing Prophet, we can know that Prophet is very an important person at that time. He is wise and trusted as he is the exemplar of Islam, either in ethics or law. The various methods of educational used by Prophet showed that he is wise and creative to explain and answer any question of his followers. I agree with his opinion; Prophet Muhammad is the most chronicled personality in history. We can proved that not only from the stories back then but we can get the evidence today, in front of us; all he had said and his deeds are recorded and reported in the Quran. All of them had been compiled and that’s what we called as sunnah. The Quran and sunnah should be in the high position of our life as both of them are the source of law and ethics. To suit this article, the author chose the Prophet’s saying; “Go even to China, to seek knowledge”. We can see that this word has attracted him and wrote this article. The saying is relevant and apt today caused it shows that knowledge is important and to gain that, it’s not easy, it is not only at one place and one has gone through many obstacles besides referring to the primary source of us; Quran. Therefore, patience is essential for everyone in gaining knowledge.
Only through knowledge can one understand the nature of creation and the purpose of life an earth. That’s why Prophet asked his people go even to China, means the farthest place from yours to unravel the mysteries of creation. For that, I’m agree with the author that the word “China” in the Prophet’s saying in the present circumstances should be taken to mean any place which may be inaccessible, but has to be reached out to in the pursuit of knowledge – it could be the interior of the earth, the depths of the oceans, and all aspects of the micro and macro cosmos. Therefore, this saying of Prophet should be concerned by Muslim as well as the others because Islam preaches an inclusive approach to humanity and accepts cultural diversity.
